Beginner quilt for new baby …?
Hello, I had a girl in March and recently I've been thinking about making a quilt for her crib. I have a sewing machine and I've taught me a few things on my own, but I've never tried to make a quilt before. I would appreciate any advice that any of you may have. You could probably figure out how to do it myself, but always goes better when you do it the right way! =)
The most easy quilt is just large squares sewn. For a little more interest, I suggest starting with a block fence. You can vary the look by changing the number and width of lanes, and through their choices of fabric. See first link below for photos of inspiration. I recommend using a rotary cutter, ruler of acrylic, and a cutting mat. It's much easier to cut the material quickly and accurately. Start with cutting of 45 mm. I like the Olfa one with a compression curved grip, because when you let go, the blade retracts automatically. ALWAYS or retract the blade when cutting COVER ENDS cloth. I can not stress this enough. I know many people who have gone to the emergency room for injuries rotary cutting. Start with an acrylic ruler is 6 "x 12" or, if you can find one, 6 1 / 2 "x 12 1 / 2". The extra half inch will be much easier if you are making 6 "finished blocks, since it includes the extra 1 / 2 "tab. Finally, obtain a self-healing mat – the thin green (although I have seen in blue and pink as well). Watch for them to go on sold at craft stores like Jo-Ann Fabrics, Hancock Fabrics, Hobby Lobby, etc. to make a 6 End "block fence, with three lanes, choose three distinctly different tissues. You can choose three shades of one color or three colors completely different. Cut a 2 1 / 2 "strip of the width of the fabric (selvage to selvage). Cut the selvages. Sew the three strips together, side by side, with a 1 / 4 "seam. Try to keep the seam very accurate. Press the seams to one side. Now cut that in the blocks are the same width as the stripes are sewn high. In this case, should be 6 1 / 2 ". Arrange the apples on a table or floor for the van in the same direction. Now, every time, another block 1 / 4 turn clockwise. You will see a step or pattern emerges tissue. Repeat the strips and blocks until the size you want. I really recommend to get a good beginner quilting book as "Start Quilting with Alex Anderson," and a good reference book like "The Quilter's Ultimate Visual Guide". Take them to a copy shop (Kinko's, Staples, Office Max, etc) and cut them the link and replace with a spiral binding. This lets you lay the book flat or return to the page you want.
