Peter the Great had 11 children, but most died young. I know that infant mortality rates were, but what happened?
A lot of resources online with information on the number of children, but very little about the reasons that many of the early deaths in his family, his two wives.
You probably do not know, there was not much medical experience then. My guess is that it could have been a genetic problem or just could have been caused by child mortality rates. Rights was very pure at the time, and caused a lot of family problems (Queen Victoria was so pure which made many of their male relatives to die of hemophilia in the 1800s, long after Peter the Great, even). I do not think how many children died of infection or any disease that was little then. There is no concept of germs, wash your hands of doctors, penicillin, etc. Think about how children often get sick now and imagine what it would be if the flu or pneumonia were fatal. This is conjecture, of course, but if there is something suspicious death would probably have been rumors going. I did some research on infant mortality in the Renaissance and death during childbirth, so the number does not shocked me too.
