why dont all horses get sunburnt?
maybe im wrong, but isn’t it just pink skin on horses that burns? why? i know with people fair skin get burnt more easily, but people with dark skin still can peel and get sun damage. at my barn, the horse with the pink nose has a peely nose but my horse doesn’t. what is it about a horse’s skin that makes it so they do/don’t burn?
My dark bay mare (with not a speck of white on her nose) has gotten a sunburned nose before. I didn’t even know what it was at first, it was so unexpected! She peeled and everything. So all colors do burn.
It also has to do with the way horses’ heads are when they graze. Naturally, the muzzle is facing down and shaded by the rest of the head. Plus, most horses will stand in shade if it’s available and they are starting to feel themselves getting burned. They don’t usually burn on the back because they have fur there to protect the skin.
